CHAT of the WORLDS
The CHAT of the WORLDS offers digital exchange for global learning in a virtual space with the inclusion of perspectives from speakers and experts from countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
It is aimed at classes of all school types and deals with global issues of everyday life. The chat takes place in direct contact with a class or an individual from Asia, Africa or Latin America. A basic knowledge of English, Spanish, French or Russian is usually sufficient.
Our programme pursues the goal of ‘talking to each other instead of about each other’. CHAT of the WORLDS is based on a variety of methods and approaches that are implemented during the activities using digital tools. With the variety of methods and concepts, we make sure to use as many open source programmes and tools as possible.
CHAT of the WORLDS deals with global issues of everyday life, deepens cultural knowledge as well as language and media skills and develops personal relationships. In this way, the chat partners learn from and with each other and thus strengthen their awareness of global challenges.
The perspectives of our speakers in partner countries play a major role in CHAT of the WORLDS -projects, both in the selection of topics and in the organisation of methods and content. Speakers in Germany and in other countries have been working closely together since the initial planning stages.
At CHAT of the WORLDS, you can feel the closeness that the CHAT-partners experience. The exchange with real people leads to authentic experiences. This makes dealing with global challenges more haptic and tangible – and it’s fun!
The secondary school in Hürt and Gulu City High School took part in a project week on the topic of gender equality. The pupils were first able to get to know each other and then discuss issues relating to gender roles and gender equality in greater depth.
In a CHAT-project, pupils from the Musiqspace music school in Wissen met with children from Achupallas in Chile via video conference. This enabled them to get to know each other’s culture and make music together.
During the CHAT of the WORLDS -project days at Herder Gymnasium in Minden, Year 5 pupils were able to exchange ideas with their peers from the Sierra Nevada in Colombia and learn about their living conditions and environment, as well as the consequences of climate change.
As a regional education centre for North Rhine-Westphalia, we provide speakers for global learning and provide various didactic materials for the implementation of development education events. We also offer content and didactic advice and training for interested teachers, multipliers and CHAT facilitators.
A CHAT of the WORLDS-project is always prepared and carried out by qualified educational facilitators. Each project is planned together with the teacher and the CHAT-partners in countries of the Global South. The CHAT encounter itself is only part of a project.
The CHAT can either take place live or in different time frames. This depends on the time zone of the southern partners on the one hand and on the technical equipment and quality of the internet connection on site on the other.
We provide facilitators to interested schools, universities and extracurricular institutions and support them with preparation and follow-up, implementation and the search for suitable CHAT-partners worldwide.
– We offer training courses for teachers and other multipliers.
– We offer the opportunity to initiate and support school partnerships.
– We train education officers for the CHAT of the WORLDS-programme.
– We provide support and advice on the use of digital media and online tools.
– We make an active contribution to the implementation of the Education for Sustainable Development guideline of the state of NRW.
We welcome all educational institutions:
The CHAT of the WORLDS is mainly aimed at school classes from Year 5 onwards and extracurricular groups of young people. It is suitable for all types of schools. Our speakers come from different continents (Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia) and, in addition to CHATS in German, also offer authentic language situations in English, Spanish and French. Our speakers are moderators and can sometimes also support as translators.
In addition, we would also like to address extracurricular groups of (almost) all ages (from 11 years). For example, youth education institutions, extracurricular initiatives, universities, churches, senior citizens‘ organisations, people working with refugees, groups of people dedicated to sustainability issues and many more.
Contact us as early as possible so that we can organise a suitable collaboration.
The CHAT of the WORLDS-programme is largely funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
However, we cannot do without a small contribution from the organisers themselves.
The contributions are made up as follows:
For events up to 2 hours = 60 euros
For events over 2 to 4 hours = 70 euros
For events over 4 hours = 90 euros
An event is defined per date and group. The cost sharing is therefore per date and group. Our service includes the use of two speakers, including their travel expenses and some material costs, as well as the provision of modern technical equipment.
It is very important to us that no project participant is excluded due to these own contributions. We are therefore happy to make individual arrangements in individual cases. Please contact our regional coordinator Angelica García.
Our partners in the Global South are unfortunately excluded from BMZ funding. Of course, they are happy to receive compensation for their services in the form of a donation.
Our facilitators in Germany and in other countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America bring different expertise and perspectives from their countries of origin. They enrich the programme by sharing their very personal experiences with the pupils in NRW as experts or together with pupils. Get to know some of them better here!

The ‘CHAT-Tikette’ is the first method used in CHAT of the WORLDS-projects.
The method can be used to develop and define communication rules for dealing with each other and in the digital space.
The common goals we have and what is important to us in our educational work can be found in our Global Learning mission statement.
